How to keep your decking maintained for summer

Summer is the time of the year when decking will get the most use, therefore it is important to keep it well maintained. There is nothing better than relaxing in the comfort of your own garden under the sun’s rays. Decking is the perfect area for socialising with friends and family. Keeping your decking maintained should not be seen as a tedious task, it should be seen as protecting your investment. Below is some advice for keeping your decking in tip top condition.

Stage one:

cleaning deckingThe simplest and most cost effective way you can maintain your deck is by cleaning it. This maybe obvious to some, but it is surprising how many people neglect to clean their decking. The longer you leave the cleaning the harder the task will become. It is therefore important to cleaning your decking every couple of months. Cleaning decking could not be simpler. Firstly you need a good stiff brush to remove all the debris and moss that may have formed on the decking. It is very important to remove all the debris as this can cause damage to the deck. Once this is done give it a good wash down with a hose pipe or pressure washer. You then need some bleach, water and a bucket or large bowl.

Mix the bleach and water in accordance with the ratio stated on the back of the bottle. Scrub the solution into the decking and leave for around 15 – 20 minutes and repeat if necessary.Sometimes if the decking is older and has not been cared for, it will require a little more attention to make it looking new all over again. One way of doing this is by using the Ronseal decking stripper. This is used to remove old coats of stains & oils and provides reviving properties leaving the deck looking new and ready to be re-finished.

Stage two:

Like with most things prevention is always better than the cure. It is important to add extra layers of protection to the decking in order to secure its longevity. One way of doing this that not only makes the decking look fantastic, but also adds protection it, is by using the decking stain. This is available in a multitude of different colours and from brands such as Ronseal etc. Adding a good quality stain to your deck is a very crucial step that should not be over looked. With the advances in the paint industry most stains are easy to apply and have extremely quick drying times. This means you will be back using your decking in no time.

The decking stain works by adding an extra layer of protection to the wood. It adds important UV filters which prevent greying and maintain colour for longer. It helps prevent scuffs and scratches that constant foot fall can create. The most important factor is the high levels of water resistance which prevent blistering and cracking. Water damage can be a big problem for decking and can seriously affect its life span.

Stage three:

A deck in winterThe time of the year that can cause the most potential damage to decking and any wood in a garden is winter. Britain is well known for its harsh winters which can have a detrimental effect. If you don’t plan on using your decking in winter, a great tip is to cover it. Cover your decking using a protective sheet and secure down to prevent movement in strong winds. If you have any furniture on your deck it is always a good idea to move them into a garage or shed. If this is not possible simply cover them with a thick protective sheet. These simple tips will allow you to keep decking in great condition, meaning your friends and family can use it for many more years to come.
