Hi Vincent,

Don't stop posting. Its really interesting reading other peoples experiences. I wrote my diary for nearly a year with hardly anybody posting any replies. But, I enjoyed doing it. Well, up until the point the builders took offense to what I was writing.

How are you doing against budget ? Any chance of posting some figures.

Are the building inspectors happy with the work so far ?

Hi does anyone know what a proprietary cavity closer is? our builder doesnt speak much english and i dont know what it is..

Hi Vincent

Proprietary Cavity Closer - means a method of closing the cavity (thermally - to meet current bld regs.) around openings etc. which are bought of the shelf as to opposed to returning brickwork and insert dpc and insulation at jambs which used to be the norm.

hi there

travis perkins sell them, thermabate is one brand.
you will need to chop the block work out around the openings, and then close them out with the closers.

i did mention this before.

the other situation that you may have is that when you drop in your concrete slab, as you have now built up the internal walls you are not going to be able to lap the dpm to the dpc of the block work.

i presume from your photo that you are putting in flat ceiling as opposed to a vaulted ceiling.
this will have an effect upon the type of ventilation in the roof void, so ensure that you have that agreed with the inspector beforehand.

Hi there guys,

Thanks for the replies; the builder did know what it was in the end. We have an Indian guy who is the building regs. And his English is incomprehensible that�s why my builder didn�t understand (and naturally I wouldn�t know what it was as I�m not a builder!)

The budget is not really planned. We are kind of going as we go to be honest. We paid our builder a fixed price and it�s all inclusive to be honest. There have been some mistakes (not our fault) and we have not been charged to correct them or anything. My builder is in London and if anyone is in London or anything I highly recommend (i can pass on number if you want to see) him as his men are really really friendly and when waiting for materials etc they do odd jobs such as plastering out porch, and we have made a lot of changed which they are really happy to do. Out builder really wants to please us which is shocking lol (from stories I have heard about builders)

Bad news, my fish tank was left in the room where the wall has been knocked down and some of them died! i had to do an emergency mini tank with the heater!!

TIP: do not leave the fish in tank when in open! i checked the water and it was 10 degree celcius! i could barely fish them out!

Hi tommy,
I will send you a private message with the number. the builders name is Alan. hes pretty familiar with the council in London and has been pretty good. what kind of extension are you going with?

It is really interesting reading your diary. I am planning to have a similar side and rear extension. I am geting quotes from ATs now and looking for good builder. It'd be great if you could send me your builder's contact. Thanks in advance.
