Extension Diary

We have worked with one of our fantastic forum posters (Vicki) to provide the details of her extension in the form of a diary. Not only does she provide day by day accounts of what is happening but also ideas of costs and pitfalls that you might experience during a build. She has a wonderful sense of humour and details the highs (and lows) of the experience. She has even thrown in some great pictures.

This extension diary is available at a low cost of just £3.99 but could save you hundreds of pounds by helping you avoid the mistakes on planning, building regulations, and building that other people have made in the past. She will also help you through the low patches when you read her great stories. We have also included some questions from other people on the forum and also their comments.

My plans were submitted by the architect just before Christmas and in February they had been passed. The architect dealt with the whole process of liaising with the lanning office. It cost about £300 for planning fees, building regs and surveys and flood risk assessments etc and so began my tally of costs. Costs so far £690.
Hi Vicki

Since reading your cost I changed my bricky at last minute and he is doing my extension for £2300 (£2500 less)and will finish in 6 days. Saved myself a small fortune!.

Dan
March 28th - The dreaded Building Regs Inspector came out today to have a look at the sight before any building work actually started. He was very nice, had a good sense of humour and not at all what I had expected (I had obviously been listening too much to the builders' horror tales of officials that were impossible to deal with). I quizzed him about how to move the manhole or I.C. (inspection chamber) as it is officially known and he explained how I would have to have a new hole dug and all the drains re-aligned to meet up with its new position.
Advised all my immediate neighbours that I would be having a bonfire just before dark and they were all fine about it. The hedge was going to be difficult to get alight with it not being dead wood so I got a fire well established first using bits of old wood, I then threw the hedge on bit by bit taking care not to get the fire too big. 2 hours and 2 or 3 glasses of wine later I was sat with the children in the dark next to the embers of the fire. The patio table was as near as we could get it without it melting and the potatoes were all wrapped in foil and merrily cooking away. I hope that in months to come, when I look back at the whole project, one of the first things that will come to mind will be this night. I hope that the good memories will far out-number the bad ones.

These are a few excerpts from the diary - you can follow Vicki through the good and bad times of the build all for just £3.99. There are nearly 40 pages worth of interesting comment and pictures. The file size is just under 3MB so may take a while to download but it will be worth it.

We can accept payment by PayPal. and you will receive an email giving the link for the download within 24 hours. If you have any problems with the download, just email us at house@house-extension.co.uk.

Even though Vicki has finished the main building work she still has her kitchen to fit out. We will notify you in the future when we make additions to the diary which you will be able to download free of charge.
